Youth councilor opens youth centre

Youths in Nketa under the leadership of their youth councilor Mpumelelo Ncube, have taken the initiative to open a youth centre in ward 24, after realizing that there was no place reserved for young people to develop their skills in the area.
The Children’s Solutions Trust was officially opened with a colorful ceremony on Saturday September 10, 2011. The centre which is currently running with no resources is expected to grow into a fully fetched hub of information for the young people in the near future.
“We hope the youth centre will transform into a place where young people can access the internet and textbooks for research purposes. As it is there is no internet café in Nketa and it is expensive for young people to travel all the way into the CBD to surf the internet,” said youth councilor Mpumelelo Ncube.
He added that they aspire to reach out to young people in Nketa to mentor them into young leaders who are active in critical issues homework and assist each other in their studies. The youth center is also affording the youths a chance to talk about different issues affecting them. Some young people have also been receiving training on bead work at the centre and it is expected that more skills development programmes will be initiated once resources are available.

The youth councilor has taken the initiative despite the fact that no land has been allocated by the City Council yet for such a project in the area. They are currently using a house which they have been given access to by a pastor in the ward.
The Bulawayo Youth Council is an initiative of the NYDT. It is the first of a series of Local Youth Councils that shall be established, by the organisation, throughout Zimbabwe to represent the views of young people at a local level through giving young people the opportunity to have a voice, to discuss relevant issues, engage with decision-makers and contribute to improving their lives within their communities.
