Local Governance Capacity Building Workshop

Local Governance Capacity Building Workshop

The Bulawayo Youth Council Held its first training in local governance on the 4th of July 2009. The workshop was meant to capacitate the youth councilors with skills in Local Governance.

Topics ranging from Leadership Principles, Lobbying and advocacy, the Global Political Agreement, Constitution making , Community Mobilization and Conflict management were covered amongst others.

Facilitators included Dumisani Nkomo CEO of Habakkuk Trust, Matshobana Ncube of the Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights (ZLHR), and Rodrick Fayayo of the Bulawayo Progressive Residents Association who managed to make the one day training workshop a success. It not only equipped the young officials with the skills to identify and face head on the challenges they face in their communities, but also with the confidence of knowing they had the capacity to do so from day one.

The workshop was also graced by senior councilors, Mrs Lubimbi of ward 29, Councilor Manning of ward 1 and long serving Alderman Charles Mpofu who endorsed the young councilors and encouraged them to leave a mark of excellence in the execution of their duties. The councilors also pledged support for the young lot whom they said they would do their best to initiate into the work of local governance.

Our next activities include Policy Dialogue meetings in Bulawayo’s 12 constituencies. These dialogues seek to bring youths from all walks of life together to discuss issues pertinent to them. From these meetings Position papers shall be drafted with an aim of presenting them to the main city council with the anticipation of getting youth concerns to the highest level of local governance.

Our first meeting will be on Saturday the 11th of July in Luveve constituency which covers wards 16,. The topics will Youths Bench Marks in Zimbabwe’s New Constitution. The meeting shall be held at the Luveve Youth center at 2pm. If this is your area, please join us and raise your issues at this platform. Your youth councilor will be there and the Bulawayo City councilors for these wards will be invited as well.

If there is anything you wish for us to work on before this date or you have any comments on the B.Y.C or other youth matters in general, please post a comment on this blog or email us on
